Abundant Life and Love – No Matter the Season

The season officially changes over from summer to autumn this week with the autumnal equinox on September 22. After the equinox, the days will get shorter and nights longer until the winter solstice on December 21.

Autumn decorations are being put up around our campuses. Just today, Darlene, our memory care activities director was securing the decorations in front of our healthcare entrances at Willow Brook at Delaware Run.

Many of us look forward to autumn. Cool evening air makes for great sleeping weather. Our favorite sweatshirt comes out of storage. Fall sports hit their stride. Pumpkin spice takes over every other flavor. Apples! The leaves turning! Halloween!—I could go on for days.

During autumn, our energies naturally and instinctively move back toward the earth–to slow down, to begin a period of rest. The plants are a good example. While you and I may see their brown and withering leaves and assume they are dying, they are simply transferring their energy. They sense the changes in the air and pull their life-force back into their roots, below ground, where they settle until they sense the changes that signal spring’s arrival. (The plants are much better than us about slowing down!)

The irony is that in this process of slowing down, somehow we find ourselves busier than ever! I think of all the woodland animals putting away nuts and other goodies for the winter, frantically digging and burying. And for us humans, it seems as if everyone is trying to fit in their festivals, games, weddings, outings, classes, and outdoor activities before frigid temperatures, howling winds, and snow enters the forecast.

We’re looking forward to pumpkin carving and decorating this year! Photo from a previous year at Willow Brook Christian Home.

Willow Brook is no exception. All of our campuses, while not yet bedecked with autumnal colors, have calendars packed full of activities to celebrate the season. Whether it is a campus Fall Fest (complete with a chili cook-off!), a country drive to see the beautiful autumn foliage, or Halloween parties, our residents and families will have ample opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the season.

So why not enjoy the season with us? Maybe you are thinking of making a move before winter arrives, or know someone who is on the fence about community living. Autumn is a great time to tour our campuses, take in our gorgeous grounds, meet our staff, and sit down for a delicious meal. If you are a friend or family member, be sure to take advantage of our walking paths, scenic courtyards, and quiet spaces for conversation when visiting us. Let us show you the abundant life and love you can find here, no matter the season.
