The Wellness Wheel: Social Wellness at Willow Brook

Community life lends itself to social wellness. In fact, more socialization is one of the top reasons people choose to live in a community setting like Willow Brook. So, in our final segment of the Wellness Wheel we will be examining the Social Wellness wedge. Perhaps you have always aspired to age at home–many people do. But especially if you live alone, aging at home can be lonely. If you have an outgoing personality, thrive on meeting new people, or enjoy conversations and meals with others, aging at home alone may not be ideal for you. Yes, we are biased here at The Babbling Brook, but we have seen how people come to life when they are part of a community. When they have the chance to make new friends, to converse at dinner, to be involved in activities with other people on the journey.

There is beauty, too, in building relationships with people from different places who have different experiences to share. What becomes clear is that we are one human family, in this place, at this time—we are fellow travelers. In community, there is also that wonderful ability to be as social as you want—and then close your door, or go back home when you need some time alone. Even when you need that time to yourself, your community is still there waiting, surrounding you with love and support. In retirement communities like Willow Brook, there are always staff onsite, and this can be very reassuring for people as they age.

Residents at Willow Brook Christian Village were able to have a St. Patrick's Day Party (a day early) together. Just look at the joy on their faces!

Social wellness is really about relationships with other people, and Willow Brook has some great examples of how our staff and residents come together to share in each other’s lives. For 50 years, Willow Brook has welcomed thousands of residents and staff. Perhaps one day, we will have the privilege of welcoming you.
