Small Joys Segment 2: Willow and Brooke

Welcome to part two of our series about the small joys of living at Willow Brook. Today, we are highlighting Willow Brook Christian Village’s very own Willow and Brooke, two gerbils who consistently delight residents with their antics and joie d’vivre.

The Village, as it is affectionately known, is located just south of downtown Delaware, off Columbus Pike (Route 23). And the story of how Willow and Brooke were brought to the Village is a beautiful one. In the deep darkness of the early pandemic months of 2020, our activity director noticed that a certain resident was really struggling with the lockdown conditions. It was a lonely and isolating time for many, but this particular resident was near despondency. Our activity director brought Willow and Brooke to this resident to serve as companions and to lift her spirits.

And they did. In fact, the resident began to emerge from her sadness and loneliness and word got around about Willow and Brooke. Because their cage is on a cart, Willow and Brooke are mobile and can go anywhere to visit any of our residents who are having a tough day, aren’t feeling well, or just need the calm and happiness that animals are so good at providing. Willow and Brooke, along with Faith the therapy dog (who visits weekly) and the four fish tanks throughout the Village (Willow Brook loves fish!) serve as constant reminders of the goodness of God’s creation and our connection to all living things.

In addition to our furry friends, the Village is a true one-stop shop: it features independent living, assisted living, memory care, an adult day program for persons with dementia, rehabilitation, and a skilled nursing center. If it is your goal to age in place, the Village is a perfect place to call home, and Willow and Brooke will be there to greet you!

You’ll be happy to know that Willow and Brooke received a clean bill of health last week at their annual veterinary checkup. The Village would simply not be the same without them.

  1. What a sweet story. Gerbils are so cute and active and animals in general help lighten our moods. Thanks for sharing.
