Read More » Becoming an at-home caregiver for a family member is one of the most loving, selfless acts a person can take on. Many people find caregiving highly rewarding and fulfilling.
However, even the strongest caregivers need support to combat stress and burnout. And, during the busy holiday season, caregivers often need extra support to juggle all their responsibilities.
If you’re a senior caregiver, or if you have a caregiver in your life, here are three ways to make the holidays a bit easier for everyone:
#1: Embrace Self-Care
It’s easy for caregivers to put their own needs last. However, we all need moments for self-care and relaxation. Encourage the caregiver in your life to take some time for their health and happiness, whether that’s booking a massage, taking a yoga class, or just curling up with a good book. Consider sending them a care package or offering to watch their loved one so they get out of the house for a few hours to run errands or shop for gifts.
#2: Reimagine Holiday Traditions
Caring for an aging loved one can be a full-time job. It can make it difficult to focus on anything else, including treasured holiday traditions and activities. Instead of trying to make everything perfect, think of ways to simplify holiday traditions.
For example, if traveling isn’t an option for the caregiver or their loved one, bring the festivities to them with holiday movies, music, or crafts you can do together. Instead of preparing an elaborate meal, order in from a favorite restaurant. Remember, making the holidays more manageable doesn’t mean they will be any less meaningful!
#3: Be a Listening Ear This Holiday Season
Sometimes, the best gift you can give a caregiver is your presence. Invite them to open up and listen without judgment. Knowing that someone cares about them and their experience can lighten the emotional load for caregivers, especially during the hectic holiday season.
If you’re a “secondary” caregiver or long-distance caregiver within your family, being attentive and supportive is all the more important. During a holiday visit, you may realize that your loved one needs more care than can be provided at home or that the primary caregiver is feeling burned out.
This can open the door to important conversations about next steps for your senior loved one, such as finding a local assisted living community that provides professional care and support.
