Connection & Belonging: Why Community Matters More as We Grow Older

As humans, we all need connection and belonging. That doesn’t change as we grow older. In fact, it’s especially important for older adults to stay connected with others and engaged in a community.

Here’s why:

Stronger Social Ties Are Good for Our Health
As we get older, our social circles tend to change. Routines change after retirement. We lose loved ones. Friends move closer to family. It can become difficult to travel and maintain relationships that once felt easy.

Social isolation and loneliness have been linked to higher risks for both physical and mental health concerns, including heart disease, obesity, weakened immunity, depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Maintaining strong social ties has the opposite effect. Interacting with others on a daily basis can boost health and longevity.

Community Living Makes Connecting Easy
One of the biggest barriers to staying socially engaged as we get older is the time and effort it takes to bring people together. Coordinating schedules, transportation, and activities isn’t easy. It can lead to fewer interactions and more time spent alone.

But when you’re a part of a community, you don’t have to go out of your way to find connection. It happens organically every day.

In many ways, independent retirement living is similar to the kind of built-in community you may have experienced in college or in a close-knit neighborhood. You’re surrounded by people in a similar stage of life, with shared spaces that create opportunities for conversation, connection, and activity.

Belonging and Purpose
It’s possible to still feel lonely even when you’re surrounded by people. That’s the difference between just staying social and feeling a sense of belonging in a community.

Belonging is about being known. When you belong somewhere, you’re welcomed and greeted by name. You feel comfortable and like you can be your true self.

That sense of belonging in a community can give you purpose. You feel empowered to participate, give back, and be a part of something larger than yourself.
